Powers leave the home full of homicidal maniacs, they stop their car and share a kiss-without bothering to FIRST leave the property. For example, when he fights with the crazy old lady, he knocks her to the ground but doesn't bother to take the butcher knife from her. Don't you think if you were locked up in an attic for several days you'd come up with SOME plan?!? This film definitely falls into the category of main characters who are just too stupid to live! Additionally, when her rescuer does arrive, he makes many logical blunders as well. Powers makes half-hearted attempts to escape but none of the plans show any evidence of being planned. In particular, when Stephanie Powers is taken prisoner, her character never seems to behave as if she is intelligent-she ignores all the warning signs that she should get out of the house NOW and was a very passive victim during much of the film or needlessly taunting her tormentor when all it would do is get her tortured. While the overall idea of a crazed nut taking a woman prisoner and torturing her is a pretty interesting idea, the whole picture is sadly sub-par because the film has so many logical flaws.
Rarely do I say this, but FANATIC is sure a movie that could use a re-make. However, when she arrives in the middle of nowhere to see the old lady, she is met by a very crazy and dangerous woman who holds her prisoner and tortures her-all because she is a strange self-styled religious nut! Much of the action is pretty tense and the film has a following as a cult film because the action is so often over the top (sort of like a super-evil version of WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE?). You gather her first fiancé died and that is why she is engaged again. She also agrees with her ex-fiancé's mother to first stop by for a visit.
